  1. Haven't had time to really work on these ideas a lot yet. But I did try some of the 'Simple Sound Descriptions' with 4th grade band kids today, with some success. With those students, we also incorporated low/high, and empty/full (as a way of creating transparent/dense textures, or, lots of space/no space). I actually listed all of these options on a whiteboard and then pointed to choices (or combinations of choices) in order to have them elicit a sound response. (On a separate note, I gave my 4th grade band students a "composition homework assignment". I asked them to draw a one-minute timeline. At various points on the timeline, they will make a mark as to what kind of sound happening (from the simple sound descriptions) should take place. I suggested they think about what kind of feeling they want their piece to convey...like starting out creepy, gradually getting scarier, and then ending peacefully, etc. They are going to submit their "timeline compositions" next week).

Still thinking about the idea of some kind of board/projection with the various cues on it that students "point to" (laser pointers?) in some way to request cues. Could potentially bypass the issue of coming up with a way to cue so many different ideas at once. Not sure how this communicates back via monkeys/wizard (unless monkeys/wizards end up using a different cue system via their computers). Will give some more thought and will post soon.
